Chartwell Gravesites

The cemetery is on the corner of 3rd Avenue and Romney Road. The Voortrekker LNR Robberts is buried here. Wessel Hendrik Robberts is buried here. Robberts "e" surname is no doubt misspelt on the headstone, he was most likely the son of LNR Robberts.

He died in Modderspruit Hospital, most likely of wounds, on 23 January 1900. This hospital is listed in British records as a “Stationary Hospital” near Charlestown (Volksrust), which was in operation from 12 January 1900 until 13 July 1900. The assumption is that he was severely wounded in a skirmish (leading up to the Battle of Spion Kop which took place on 23 to 24 January 1900) and taken to the British Field Hospital.

The FAK (www.FAK.org.za) may be able to get more details on the Voortrekker side which we would like to pursue in order to have as much information on the history here as possible. If you have any more information regarding these sites, please get in touch with us.
