the Klein Jukskei River

The Klein Jukskei River is a small but important river system in Gauteng. It begins in the Witwatersrand ridge and flows into the Jukskei River, which eventually joins the Crocodile River and forms part of the Limpopo River system.

Despite its modest size, the Klein Jukskei River plays a crucial role in the local ecosystem. It supports a diverse array of plant and animal species, many of which are endangered or threatened. The river provides habitat for fish, birds, insects, and other creatures, and its banks are lined with trees and other vegetation that provide shelter and food.

Unfortunately, like many rivers in Gauteng, the Klein Jukskei River has been under threat from human activities such as urbanisation and industrialisation with rising of the floor of the river bed due to increase in sedimentation which has resulted in the raising of the riverbed with result flooding occurring more frequently, changes in the vegetation with an increase in alien vegetation, changes in the water quality due to increase in phosphates washing into the river.

Another critical aspect of the Conservancy’s work is habitat restoration. Through activities such as river clean-ups, tree-planting, and invasive species removal
In recent years, the river has suffered from serious pollution and habitat destruction, in particular sewage leaks into the river from the nearby Zandspruit Pump station and the rising main sewer system, which has led to a decline in the health of the ecosystem. Raw sewage is a serious threat to human health. Wastewater can contain harmful bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens that can cause a range of illnesses. Additionally, chemicals and other toxic pollutants can mix with the raw sewage, creating a dangerous cocktail that can be deadly to humans, fish and other aquatic life.

The Chartwell Conservancy, residents, local schools, organisations such as OUTA and ARMOUR have been working to address the situation and to lobby Johannesburg Water on this matter. It is important that we remain dedicated to protecting and restoring the river and its surrounding ecosystem, and to continue to work to ensure that the area is once again healthy and thriving ecosystem.

By educating the public about the river’s biodiversity and the threats it faces, the Conservancy hopes to inspire individuals and communities to take action and make a difference. Another critical aspect of the Conservancy’s work is habitat restoration. Through activities such as river clean-ups, tree-planting, and invasive species removal, the group is actively working to restore the health and diversity of the Klein Jukskei River ecosystem.
